Install fire protection Smoke alarms are your best early warning system in the event of fire. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement, and outside each sleeping area. If you sleep with the door closed, install one inside your sleeping area as well.
Test alarms every month and replace batteries once a year, or whenever an alarm "chirps" to signal low battery power. Never "borrow" a smoke alarm's battery for another use - a disabled alarm can't save your life. Replace all alarms that are more than 10 years old. For complete home protection, consider installing an automatic fire sprinkler system.
Plan your escape from fire If a fire occurs in your home, you have to get out fast. Sit down with your family and work out an escape plan in advance. Be sure that everyone knows at least two unobstructed exits - including windows - from every room. (If you live in an apartment building, use the stairs, not the elevator to escape from fire.) Decide on a meeting place outside. Have your entire household practice you escape plan at least twice a year.
Keep an eye on smokers Careless smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths in North America. Smoking in bed or when you are drowsy could be fatal. Provide smokers with large, deep, non-tip ashtrays, and soak butts with water before discarding them. Before going to sleep or leaving home after someone has been smoking, check under cushions and around upholstered furniture for smoldering cigarettes.
Remember:matches and lighters are tools, for adults only! Use only child-resistant lighters and store all matches and lighters up high, where kids can't see or reach them, preferably in locked cabinet. Teach children that matches and lighters are tools, for grown-ups only. Teach young children to tell a grown-up if they find matches or lighters; older children should bring matches and lighters to an adult immediately.
Kitchen safety Always stay near cooking to monitor it closely. Keep cooking areas clear of combustibles, and wear clothes with short, rolled-up, or tight-fitting sleeves when you cook. Turn pot handles inward on the stove where you can't bump them and children can't grab them. Enforce a "kid-free" zone three feet (one meter) around your kitchen range. If grease catches fire in a pan, slide a lid over the pan to smother the flames and turn off the heat source. Leave the lid on until the pan is completely cool.
Give space heaters space Keep portable heaters and space heaters at least three feet (one meter) away from anything that can burn. Keep children and pets away from heaters, and turn them off when you leave home or go to sleep.
Use electricity safely If an electric appliance smokes or has an unusual smell, unplug it immediately, then have it serviced before using it again. Replace any electrical cord that is cracked or frayed. Plug only one electrical cord into each receptacle. Avoid running any cords under rugs. Don't tamper with your fuse box or use improper-size fuses.
Cool a burn Run cool water over a burn for 10 to 15 minutes. Never apply ice. Never put butter or any other grease on a burn. If the burned skin blisters or is charred, see a doctor immediately.
Crawl low under smoke If you encounter smoke while you are escaping from a fire, use an alternative escape route. If you must escape through smoke, crawl on your hands and knees, keeping your head 12 to 24 inches (30 to 60 centimeters) above the floor, where the air will be cleaner.
Stop, drop, and roll If your clothes catch fire, don't run. Stop where you are, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and roll over and over to smother the flames. Cool the burn with water and call for help.

Careless smoking is the leading cause of residential fire deaths. Smoke detectors and smolder-resistant bedding and upholstered furniture are significant fire deterrents.
Arson is the second largest cause of residential fires and residential fire deaths. In commercial properties, arson is the major cause of deaths, injuries and dollar loss.
Heating is the third leading cause of residential fire deaths. Heater fires are the leading cause of fire deaths in the southeastern U.S.; wood stoves are particularly a problem in the northern U.S.
Cooking is the leading cause of apartment fires and the second most frequent cause of single-family residential fires. These fires often result from unattended cooking and human error, rather than from mechanical failures of stoves or ovens.

Toilet Overflow or Sewer Backup? Call Today 601.353.2286
Water damage can be classified by the three types of contaminated water. SERVPRO Professionals will inspect your home or business to determine the appropriate plan of action for the type of water encountered.
The three types of contaminated water:
Category 1: "Clean Water"
Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.
Water from a clean source like a broken water line
If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3
Category 2: "Gray Water"
Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.
May contain bacteria and viruses
Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated
Category 3: "Black Water"
Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

It was first adopted in the 1960s to indicate possible exposure to biological substances that may contain toxins, viruses, or medical waste.
Exposure to biological and chemical contaminants can pose serious health consequences. A failure to properly remove such substances can contribute to unhealthy and dangerous environments. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals are trained to safely clean and remove biohazardous substances and dispose of them properly in accordance with OSHA and health regulations.

Hurricanes are catastrophic, causing severe damage to homes and businesses. Relief efforts often cease long before an area has recovered and people are left with only local resources to recover. So many homes are affected by exponential water damage that in the recovery process, you may begin to witness the appearance of mold and mildew within your home.
Knowledge of emergency preparedness when it comes to mold growth that follows devastating storms?
Hurricanes are catastrophic and bring the potential for severe damage to homes and businesses from storm surge, high winds, debris, tornadoes, and rain/flooding. Preliminary preparation is always recommended, but what does one do in the aftermath of a tropical storm? In addition to the high humidity found in storm-affected areas, a water-soaked interior is an ideal habitat for a mold colony to grow and thrive.
Contaminated materials that create mold exposure can cause serious health effects. Many people who suffer from allergies or respiratory issues are especially sensitive to molds. The prevention of mold can be difficult and will require the assistance of a trained professional from our SERVPRO TEAM.
Mold removal is not an easy task
On the surface, mold removal may seem easy to get rid of, but that is certainly not the case. For one, mold spores are invisible to the naked eye. And they begin to grow in no more than a few hours and spread as quickly as they can. It goes without saying that it may take days or even weeks before homeowners can begin to clean up their homes following a devastating flood.
But, by that time, it may be a little too late; mold may have colonized the upholstered furniture, occupied the home surfaces (walls and ceilings), or invaded the duct system, etc. Naturally, any attempt to clean mold growth on this scale on your own may not only result in spreading the spores even further but may also drag out the cleanup process.
With SERVPRO, mold remediation always involves a mold inspection. Cleaning up existing mold while avoiding exposure to oneself as well as homeowners. We also prevent new growth by addressing the moisture source. Based on calculations of the contamination area, we determine the area we will be working in. Some examples of steps we take to take care of the mold:
Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

1. Mold can begin growing in as little as 24 hours!
Potentially dangerous mold needs three things to start growing: oxygen, moisture and organic material. In an untreated area with these factors, mold can visibly form very quickly. While not all mold strains are toxic, there are several types that are dangerous to your health; you definitely don’t want Aspergillus or Stachybotrys (Black Mold) growing in your home!
2. Even the smallest crack in a pipe can spill 250 gallons of water a day!
An eighth of an inch may not sound massive, but a crack that size in a water supply pipe can rack up massive repair bills in a hurry. As much as 250 gallons can leak out in a day’s time! Not fun to deal with!
3. Floodwater can be electrically charged – and deadly!
Even a few inches of water can reach outlets, baseboard heaters, power cords and other devices connected to your electrical system. As soon as you see unwanted water, try to turn off the electricity to the affected area. If you are unable to do so safely, or the fuse box is located in the affected area, contact your electric utility and have them disconnect the power to your home from their end.
4. Even fresh water can turn into a biohazard over time!
Water damage comes in three categories – clean, gray and black:
• Clean water has no contamination. It can come from clean water sources, such as water supply lines, tub overflows or fresh rainwater.
• Grey water has contaminants that are not considered pathogenic. These contaminants still have a chance to cause illness or discomfort. Washing machine overflows, aquarium water and washing machine leaks are all examples of grey water flooding.
• Black water has pathogenic contamination and is unsanitary. Sewage, chemical waste, and any water sitting for more than 72 hours are all considered black water situations. If left alone, clean water will turn into a pathogenic biohazard in only a few days.

5 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN DEALING WITH FIRE AND SMOKE DAMAGE
It’s always best to contact a professional fire and smoke damage restoration company immediately, as they can help you get your property on the road towards recovery.
Even small fires can cause significant issues due to the water intrusion left behind from firefighting efforts, damaged furniture and other belongings, and the soot left behind.
Here are a few facts to consider when dealing with fire and smoke damage restoration:
1. SAFETY FIRST
The damage from a fire can affect the structural integrity of your home or office building, so you should be extremely cautious to enter the property before professionals let you know it is safe to enter.
2. THE DAMAGE OCCURS QUICK
Fire and smoke can rapidly cause severe damage to your property. Soot residue settles immediately after a fire, and it can cause permanent discoloration.
Also, just hours after a fire, the finishings on wood furniture can be ruined, metals can rust, and clothing could be permanently discolored.
And walls and floors are likely to be damaged too, from peeling and discolored paint to warped floors and drywall. The longer you wait to call our SERVPRO team, the more expensive and challenging restoration may be- time is of the essence.
3. THE PROFESSIONALS ARE INVALUABLE
Contacting SERVPRO, the experts immediately may seem unnecessary, but they can help to limit further issues as you deal with the fire and smoke damage restoration process.
SERVPRO can assess the damage, determine items that can be saved, and work to remove the water, along with other odors, from your home or building. With the right equipment and expertise, they know how to act effectively and quickly.
4. DEALING WITH TEXTILES
It is certainly not easy to restore fabrics and remove smoke and soot odors from textiles. This includes clothing, carpet, and other materials. An expert cleaner can assist with more challenging items, especially carpet and delicate clothing.
After the smell has been dealt with, you’ll still need several wash cycles to get your clothing and your carpet clean.
5. AND, OFTEN THERE’S WATER DAMAGE TOO
Fire suppression efforts can ruin your possessions as well. Water used to put out the fire can result in water damage. And water damage left untreated can lead to mold growth. Typical firefighting chemicals can also leave behind a mess. In most cases, dealing with these issues requires the experts to be called in to help.
There is a lot to think about when it comes to restoring your property after a fire. Hopefully, this information will help you on your way to dealing with fire and smoke damage safely.

In the last few months, a number of variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, have began circulating globally. Variants arise through a process called mutation where the virus undergoes changes to its genetic structure. The new variants can have characteristics that are different from the original virus.
Even though the virus is changing one thing remains the same. Disinfecting and properly cleaning your place of business is a crucial aspect in protecting your employees and customers alike. SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County offers to the surrounding areas Covid fogging and disinfecting wipe downs to help keep our communities health and in business.
PREVENTION IS KEY
Don't wait until you have a positive case in your work environment before considering a disinfectant cleaning. Regular cleaning can prevent the spread of the virus when it lingers on surfaces such as door handles or light switches for example. A positive case can result in your business being temporarily closed down. By taking a proactive approach business owners are able to stay open during these unprecedented times.

Commercial water damage restoration is often more complex than residential water damage restoration and usually requires an intensive approach. The size and structure of commercial buildings, the extent of damage, the varying uses of space, and the number of occupants all greatly affect the restoration process. Aside from these, there’s usually always a time constraint for the job because business has to continue as soon as possible.
In this post, we’ll talk about some of the most common causes of water damage in commercial properties and how to deal with them.
DAMAGED WINDOWS
In commercial buildings, water damage is often caused by windows that are not properly sealed. Damaged windows can cause moisture to seep in, which triggers a lot of problems including mold build-up and warped wood and drywall. Resealing windows regularly is important as caulk can break down over time.
DAMAGED PIPES
Broken pipes can stem from many reasons, such as changes in pressure, deteriorated water supply lines and sewer drains, and cold weather (freezing temperature can cause pipes to burst). Bulging walls, water stains on walls or floors, cracked or loose tiles, and musty smell – these are all signs of damaged pipes. Detecting leaky pipes is challenging and it usually requires some specialized water leak detection equipment.
BUILDING FOUNDATION
If gutters are not cleaned regularly, they can get clogged, causing water to leak into the property through the roof or the foundation. One of the most common signs of leaks in building foundations are puddles nearby or framing that has become wet. Poor drainage systems can also lead to water damage in your foundation.
ROOF LEAKS
A leaky roof can cause ceiling damage, mold or mildew issues, fire hazards from shortened wires, and compromised structural integrity. Exposure to heavy rains and snow make roofs vulnerable to damage. Moreover, incorrect snow/ice removal can also trigger water damage in roofs.
HVAC PROBLEMS
HVAC systems work by heating or cooling the air through a series of ducts. Over time, these ducts wear out and get damaged, resulting in leaks. The HVAC system needs to be cleaned regularly and the excess water from the condensation reservoirs has to be removed to prevent water damage.
SEWER CLOGS
Sewer water contains bacteria and other pathogens that cause illnesses and infections. If you see signs of sewage damage, such as gurgling sounds or water backing up out of the drain or toilet, you should call water damage and restoration professional immediately.
SPRINKLER SYSTEM LEAKS
Other causes of water damage in commercial buildings are leaks in sprinkler systems. Signs of sprinkler leaks include wet surfaces like drywall and carpets, presence of mold and mildew, and standing water. Regularly inspect your sprinkler systems for leaks and moisture.
By Regularly checking and monitoring these potential sources of water damage you can better protect your company or commercial property from severe problems. But as always, when disaster strikes, give your local SERVPRO a call to be sure you're dealing highly trained and certified water restoration professionals.
Severe thunderstorms are officially defined as storms that are capable of producing hail that is an inch or larger or wind gusts over 58 mph. Hail this size can damage property such as plants, roofs and vehicles. Wind this strong is able to break off large branches, knock over trees or cause structural damage to trees. Some severe thunderstorms can produce hail larger than softballs or winds over 100 mph, so please pay attention to the weather so you know when severe storms are possible. Thunderstorms also produce tornadoes and dangerous lightning; heavy rain can cause flash flooding.
If you know what to do before severe weather hits you can increase your chances of survival. The following actions are designed to teach you how to stay safe in a severe thunderstorm.
Be Weather-Ready: Check the forecast regularly to see if you're at risk for severe weather. Listen to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay informed about severe thunderstorm watches and warnings. Check the Weather-Ready Nation for tips.
Sign Up for Notifications: Know how your community sends warning. Some communities have outdoor sirens. Others depend on media and smart phones to alert residents to severe storms.
Create a Communications Plan: Have a family plan that includes an emergency meeting place and related information. Pick a safe room in your home such as a basement, storm cellar or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows. Get more ideas for a plan at: https://www.ready.gov/make-a-plan
Practice Your Plan: Conduct a family severe thunderstorm drill regularly so everyone knows what to do if a damaging wind or large hail is approaching. Make sure all members of your family know to go there when severe thunderstorm warnings are issued. Don't forget pets if time allows.
Prepare Your Home : Keep trees and branches trimmed near your house. If you have time before severe weather hits, secure loose objects, close windows and doors, and move any valuable objects inside or under a sturdy structure.
Help Your Neighbor: Encourage your loved ones to prepare for severe thunderstorms. Take CPR training so you can help if someone is hurt during severe weather.
As always, SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County is here to assist our local community & surrounding areas with any needs they may encounter while recovering from the damages of storms.

Between the thunderstorms, hail, and high winds of spring and summer, and the freezing temperatures of winter, Mississippi has its fair share of stormy conditions year-round. And the results of this extreme weather can cause a host of problems for your home.
The good news is that you can take action to keep your shelter in top condition, even when stormy weather comes along. The key is being aware of what to look for. Whenever a storm passes through, take time to check your home inside and out for signs of storm damage. When you see these signs call SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County to get them fixed and keep your home protected.
Storm Damage Inside Your Home
Rain, snow, ice dams, hail… all of these can impact your home interior, exposing it to too much moisture. After any kind of stormy weather, do a walk-through inside your home.
1. Ceilings
If your roof is leaking, you’re very likely to see the evidence on your interior ceilings. While the rain is happening, or immediately after, check for:
Wet spots
Dripping
Dark marks
Discoloration
Flaking paint
2. Walls
Walls can also show signs of moisture damage. Keep an eye out for:
Spots of mold and mildew (may be black, brown, red, yellow)
Flaking or cracked drywall
Water stains
Streaks of water
3. Floors
Don’t overlook your flooring, which can also show signs of leaks:
Wet spots and puddles
Sloping or uneven floors
4. Attic
Leaks typically affect the highest point of your home first, which means you may see damage in the attic:
Water puddles
Drips or stains underneath roof
Wet attic beams
Damp insulation
Light peeking through roof
5. Plumbing
Storm damage can impact your home’s plumbing, because leaks can sneak into areas where pipes are installed. Watch out for:
Wet spots around toilets, sinks and faucets
Musty, moldy smell
Odor of sewage
When moisture damage isn’t dealt with quickly, your home can end up suffering from a host of cascading problems that will grow worse over time. Storm damage can lead to:
Cracked foundation
Weakened roofing
Rotten siding
Mold growth
These issues can spread quickly, affecting your home’s structural integrity, creating an unhealthy environment for loved ones, and lessening your home’s value.
It’s better to address storm damage immediately, before it grows worse. If you notice any of these issues, call SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County to assess your damages and provide you with the ideal road to recovery.

Move Outs – When the structure has suffered extensive damage, the cleanup and restoration process may need to be facilitated by relocating the contents for cleaning, deodorization and storage while structural repairs are being completed. This is no easy task:
First, we start with inventorying your content and separating the salvageable from the non-salvageable. Second, we carefully pack up the salvageable content from the home to take it to our secured warehouse, where we start the cleaning process. Next, we unpack the items, clean them, and repack them into new, fresh boxes. No matter what time of year it is, if you’re going to be away from your home for an extended amount of time – even just overnight – it’s a smart idea to turn off your water until you return home. Why? Because it doesn’t take very much water to cause a whole lot of damage! If your pipes freeze and burst while you’re gone, or if a washer hose ruptures or a supply line leaks, major water damage can occur! There are a few things you can do before heading out of town to give you peace of mind when it comes to the state of your home’s water.
Shut off the Main Water Valve
Your safest bet is to turn off the main water valve. Make sure the adults in your home know where the main shutoff valve is and know how to turn it on and off. (Knowing this will also come in handy if you’re at home during an emergency, so the water can quickly be shut off!) Locate the main water valve near your water meter usually located in the basement, near the front of the house, attached to the outside of the home’s exterior, or in an underground box in the yard.
There are two types of main shutoff valves. You’ll probably find what’s called a “gate valve” if you’re in an older home. Turn the rounded handles a certain number of times to open or close the valve. The “ball valve” is more common today. Turn the lever-like handle 90 degrees to turn the water on or off. If this valve crosses the pipes, it’s closed; if it’s parallel to them, it’s open.
Test shutting off the valve ahead of time by locating the main shutoff valve, turning it off, and running a faucet. If no water comes out, you’ve successfully turned off your home’s water supply!
Turn off Individual Water Valves
But what if you’re leaving during the summer and you can’t turn off your entire water supply because you have automatic sprinklers? If this is the case, you can simply turn off individual water valves to the water sources with the highest damage risk. These sources include the dishwasher, washing machine, and ice-maker. Individual shutoff valves tend to be located directly on the supply lines leading to most appliances, including toilets and faucets. Usually, this will be a small rounded handle that you’ll turn clockwise. Doing this will turn off the water to that source. (Take note that the ice-maker shutoff valve may be under the sink or in the basement!)
If you’ll be shutting off individual water supplies, it’s a good idea to kill two birds with one stone and check your supply lines themselves. They can become weak over time, resulting in leaks, cracks, or bulging. If you notice these or other forms of corrosion, you may want to repair or replace them before leaving.
Turn off Water Supply to Outdoor Faucets
If you’re leaving during the colder seasons, it’s a good idea to also shut off the water to your outdoor faucets as well. Their shutoff valve will most likely be located inside your house. Shut it off before you head out the door. Once you’ve shut off the valve, turn on the exterior faucet to drain any excess water. And remember to detach the hoses, too!

As you can see in this picture, the carpet is lifted as the equipment sends air under it. This helps the carpet dry more quickly and efficiently. The wall is being dried with the equipment also. If you want to reduce the claim of a fire damage incident, then seeking for restoration and cleaning services can help. Ending up replacing what was salvageable is expensive, and that is why you need to make the right decisions as soon as you can. Cleaning is part of the work that professional restorers perform when responding to such events in Central Mississippi. We're going to cover some of the principles of cleaning that we follow when returning your contents to their preloss condition.
When our SERVPRO team arrives at your home to attend to fire damage, we perform a site inspection which helps us to locate the smoke particles. Usually, the inspection starts from the point where the fire started from; then we determine how far the residues have traveled within the building. It's a huge mistake to assume that all smoke residues all the same. A fire burns different items, which means that different smoke particles can be in the same area. Identifying the different particles helps us to come up with the most appropriate cleaning method.
Our SERVPRO team also selects a cleaning method which preserves the surface or material that has the smoke residues. Some cleaning techniques may be too aggressive to the point of making some surfaces or materials unsalvageable. At this point, we're ready to capture and remove the particles. Remember, there was an interaction of different proportions of moisture, gases, oxygen, and heat during the formation of the smoke particles. These variables make it challenging to choose a defined cleaning method to fix all fire damage incidents.
To break the bond between the residues and the surface, we use an understanding of the elements of cleaning - temperature, time, chemical action and agitation. Chemical reactions speed up as the temperature increases, so we have to settle on right temperature - which usually depends on the item we are cleaning and the cleaning agent we are using.
SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County does the job right the first time. You can call us at 601-353-2286 and let our experienced technicians make your business or home “Like it never even happened.”
Attention Business Owners: 3 Facts You Need To Know
Your commercial building can be affected by flooding from several sources. Water damage can include warped flooring and moldy drywall, but one of the more immediate issues caused by flooding is the influx of contaminated water. If your business has recently been damaged by flooding, it can be helpful to understand how this type of water can cause long-term damage and what you can do to mitigate it.
It Can Contain Dangerous Chemicals
Environmental experts often call contaminated water that stems from flooding Category 3. This means the water did not come from a sterile source and may contain a variety of hazardous components, including harsh sewer and lawn chemicals that entered the water during flooding. These chemicals can make the water dangerous to touch, so calling in a flood damage and cleanup service is the safest way to have it removed.
It May Make You Sick
Category 3 water damage can be dangerous in more than one way. For example, standing black water can grow microbes that may cause a variety of health effects. Urine and feces may also be present, even if they are not immediately visible, so it is wise to avoid this type of water completely and wait for professional cleanup services to arrive.
Acting Quickly Can Be Essential
Because contaminated water can become more dangerous the longer it sits, it is a good idea to call in a cleanup crew right away. This can be important even if you believe the worst of the damage has already been done. Having the water removed may reduce the chances of long-term issues with your building’s affected floors and walls and prevent mold growth, which can be difficult to treat once it takes hold.
Cat 3 water damage can harm your commercial building in several ways. However, when you know its dangers and how to combat it, you may be able to prevent the worst of the destruction.
If your commercial building has experienced a water emergency call SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County at 601-353-2286.
Preparing Your Family For Severe Weather The SERVPRO Way
It is a good idea to always be prepared for severe weather. Even though we may have advanced warning for some types of severe weather, there are also those occasions where severe weather can catch us off-guard.
Fortunately, there are things you can do and safety tips to follow that will ensure your family is prepared for any type of severe weather occurrences.
One of the best ways to stay ahead of the weather is to create a family emergency plan and have it available at all times.
If your family does have an emergency plan in place, be sure to discuss and practice it at the start of various weather seasons so everyone knows exactly what is expected of them and what to do.
If you’ve not yet created a family emergency plan, here are some things to take into consideration when putting one together:
Emergency Alerts
Warnings and alerts are always broadcast over radio and TV, but thanks to today’s technology, it is easy to receive emergency alerts and warnings on your smartphone. If you have a weather app or Google on your smartphone, emergency alerts can literally be at your fingertips, which can provide you with valuable time in severe weather situations.
Storm Shelter Options
In areas where tornadoes are common, you’ll want to be in the lowest part of your home, preferably a basement if you have one. If that is not possible, locate an interior room on the lowest level that is away from corners, windows, doors and outside walls. Tornadoes aren’t the only weather circumstance that require shelter, and you can learn about more of the situations that call for them by visiting ready.gov.
Evacuation Routes
You should always have multiple evacuation routes mapped out, since things such as hurricanes, flooding and fires can force you from your home in a hurry. Also, be sure to take your pets into consideration and find out if there are places to stay with your pets along the way if you have furry family members evacuating with you.
Communication Methods
We all rely on cell phones to keep in touch with family, but that will not always be possible in some circumstances. Cell phone towers can be damaged in storms, phones could be lost or left behind, and where no power is available, recharging them will be impossible.
Have an emergency communications plan in place for your family and also designate a safe meeting place for your family in case you become separated.
If a storm does cause damage to your home or business, don’t hesitate to call your friends at SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County at 601-353-2286 to get the cleanup and restoration process started.

These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of experts in the field: manufacturers, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.
Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.

Fires are devastating for both residents and business owners
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
Our Fire Damage Restoration Services
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Duct cleaning generally refers to the cleaning of various heating and cooling system components of forced air systems, including the supply and return air ducts and registers, grilles and diffusers, heat exchangers heating and cooling coils, condensate drain pans (drip pans), fan motor and fan housing, and the air handling unit housing.
If not properly installed, maintained and operated, these components may become contaminated with particles of dust, pollen or other debris. If moisture is present, the potential for microbiological growth (e.g., mold) is increased and spores from such growth may be released into the air of your commercial business. Some of these contaminants may cause allergic reactions or other symptoms in people if they are exposed to them.
Ventilation systems are often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality. Make it a priority to inspect the ductwork of your business.
If your HVAC has been operating for some time without attention, it could be circulating one or more of the following:
Dust
Pollen
Odors
Dirt and debris
Other contaminants
The benefits of servicing your HVAC unit include:
Helps to restore peak energy efficiency.
May help to eliminate offensive odors.
Helps reduce the potential for mold growth.

Much like water damage categories, there are different levels of COVID-19 cleanings, precautionary, suspected, and confirmed. These differences determine protocol when it comes to providing preventative measures as well as cleaning & disinfection after someone within the building has tested positive.
Precautionary/Preventative - cleanings are a measure taken when there has been no confirmed or suspected cases.
Suspected/Person Under Investigation - cleanings happen when there is reasonable suspicion that the virus is present, or one or more people that have been in the building have been tested and are waiting for results.
Confirmed - cleanings happen after there has been a confirmed case of COVID-19 onsite.
It is very important that property owners and business stakeholders recognize their own abilities, comfort levels, resources, and risk factors. While all stages require proper precautionary & intentional steps, the CDC has issued the following protocol in regards to, Confirmed cleaning & disinfection:
Proper use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) donning and doffing
Compliance with Bloodborne Pathogens and proper disposal of of regulated waste and PPE
Disinfectants used include - diluted bleach solutions, alcohol solutions, household cleaners followed by disinfectants, EPA registered household disinfectants
SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County understands the immediate need for all stages, which is why we have made ourselves available 24/7. We are able to offer disinfection services to buildings of all sizes, including residences for those in need. Please don’t hesitate to call our office for more information on proper protocol, pricing, and the products we are using.
Currently COVID-19 is spreading across the country and globe. SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County is well aware of how serious this virus is, and wants everyone to take the proper precautions during this time. There are quite a few things that you can do to try and slow down the spreading of this virus. According to the CDC, people should practice social distancing. Try staying at least 6 feet away from people. Don’t travel to any places that are not essential. In fact many states are under a “stay home” advisory. Wash your hands and surfaces you touch often and try not to shake hands with others.
Here at SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County we are taking all the proper precautions to keep both you and our team safe while out on job sites. Our team will wear all proper PPE including respirators, Tyvek suits and gloves. Our top priority is to keep everyone healthy and save during this time. If you have any loss occur, we are still open and running. Don’t hesitate to call us at 601-353-2286.
There are many reasons that you want to call SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County, and one of those reasons is the equipment that we use on the job site. Not only do we use air movers and dehumidifiers, but we also have specialty drying equipment as well.
One of those pieces of equipment that we have is our Injectidry system. SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County is the only mitigation company in the metro area that uses this system. The Injectidry system is used when a loss has occurred on a hardwood floor. Unless the floor has begun to buckle, the Injectidry can be used to potentially save the hardwood flooring instead of having to pull and replace it. The Injectidry system contains a series of mats that are sealed tight to the floor, and these mats have hoses attached to the top that are hooked up to a vacuum that pulls the water out from underneath the floor. The water travels to a filling tank where it can then be dumped out.
We have used our Injectidry system to save many customers from having to replace their hardwood floors. If you would like to inquire more about our specialty drying equipment, please give us a call at 601-353-2286.
SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County has been working hard to bring you the best restoration service experience. We asked our customers to give us some feedback on Google on how we performed. We were overwhelmed by the kind words our customers said about us. We were even recognized by our corporate office for accounting for the most 5-star Google reviews in the SERVPRO system in 2019! #1 out of 1,700+ franchises! WOW!!!
Let’s take a look at some of the things our customers are saying about us:
From: John Mitchell
Positive: Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value
The guys at SERVPRO were great. Joseph came out on time and gave me an estimate that was comparable to the others, but much more detailed. He explained exactly what they were planning to do instead of just giving me a number like the others. Once the crew got there, they began work immediately and never slowed down. They kept everything clean while doing the job (as clean as possible when you’re tearing things out and remodeling)! I can’t say enough about the professionalism of this company and its employees. I would highly recommend using them if you are in need!!
From: Kaden Goss
Positive: Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness

I have roof damage from all the storms we've had and a ceiling with water damage. Called SERVPRO of Jackson they were out to my house fast. Took pictures and sent a team to do repairs to ceiling and drying out. Gave me great advice to call my air condition guy to re-wrap from water damage before they repair my ceiling. The guys are awesome. They know what they are doing and walk you thru the process. Be smart, call these people 1st before anyone else. I give them 5 stars.
We love hearing all of these encouraging words from our customers. Please call us for any property restoration or reconstruction needs: 601-353-2286.

On February 16, the Pearl River reached a flood level it hasn’t risen to since the 1980’s. A state of emergency was issued by Mississippi Governor, Tate Reeves and residents living in the low lying areas of the flood zone were asked to evacuate. Areas that are expected to be affected from rising waters are parts of Northeast Jackson, Eastover, Lakeland Dr., parts of Downtown Jackson, parts of Byram and parts of Richland. Many of these areas along the river have already begun to take on water and many houses and commercial properties will continue to take on water until the river crest at 37.5-38 feet. Once the river crest, it will take a few days for the water to fully reside to allow our crews to get in the area to access the damage, but once the water does fully recede, our team will begin working tirelessly to assist anyone who may be affected by the flooding. If you or anyone you know will need assistance, please do not hesitate to call us at 601-353-2286.
A mold issue is something no home or property owner wants to deal with. Unfortunately, some properties inevitably develop mold growth. Mold thrives in moisture and can develop anytime a water source is available. Since mold spores are microscopic, they are easily spread through a home or building through the air-duct system, eventually spreading through the home within 48-72 hours. Mold can even be spread through clothing or pets. Mold may also develop a strong, musty smell. Once the source of mold growth is located, it must be fixed to prevent future mold growth, and the present mold must be removed.
If you think you have a mold issue, give SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County a call at 601-353-2286. You can schedule an inspection to have one of our remediation specialists to come out and inspect for mold. Our team is highly trained and certified in mold removal and remediation. We can help make your mold issue “Like it never even happened.”
After the flood waters recede and the debris is cleaned up, most people will want to begin rebuilding as quickly as possible. While it is understandable to try to get back into a home or business as quickly as possible to try to retain some normalcy, problems can occur when trying to rebuild too quickly. Flood waters have likely submerged the wood causing it to absorb large amounts of water. Beginning the rebuild process to quickly can lead to mold growth, insect infestation, and rotten wood.
Flood waters are filthy. They contain bacteria, viruses, waste particles, and all kinds of gross contaminants. Materials that are more porous, like drywall and carpet, must be removed and replaced.
CAUTION! Make sure you inspect for structural and electrical damage from outside to determine if it is safe to enter. Electrical safety is extremely important in floods. Check for fire hazards and gas leaks. Use battery-powered lights. Wear sturdy, rubber shoes, rubber gloves, and eye protection. If mold is present, wear a respirator with a HEPA filter.
Lastly, if you need assistance getting your home or business back together, call SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County. 601-353-2286.

Be Ready for Jackson & Madison Flood Damage When You Partner with SERVPRO
The Hinds and Madison County areas are no strangers to flood damage. It has been 40 years since Jackson has experienced a major flood, but heavy rainfall can happen quickly and cause flooding that is localized in urban areas. This may sound scaled down from the Easter Flood of ‘79, but the damage done can be dangerous and devastating.
Flood Water Vs. Other Water Losses
Flood damage in Jackson and Madison is considered a Category 3 water loss, meaning it is grossly contaminated. The water carries solid debris and bacteria that can cause diseases. Floods can be very dangerous, but even if the flooding is not life-threatening, bacteria and viruses being carried in the water can cause serious health risks.
How To Mitigate
Safety is a priority in flooding situations. Live electrical wires are a serious, life-threatening hazard. Like any water damage, standing water must be removed and the structure dried, but with added protections and cautions. Porous materials sometimes cannot be cleaned and disinfected to required standards post-flood. Carpeting and padding must be removed and discarded. Drywall needs to have flood-cuts done to remove any hidden water. Flood-cuts can potentially save the remaining wall and prevent microbial growth from starting to spread. Any water-soaked insulation must be discarded too. If the debris contains chemicals, sewage, or other potentially harmful materials, we might need to contain the solids and dispose of them according to local hazardous waste rules.

Fires can happen to anyone anywhere! When an unexpected fire emergency occurs, it is beneficial to have a plan in place! Everyone, including pets needs to be evacuated and to know where to meet. Make sure your meeting place is a safe distance from the home to avoid smoke inhalation. While the main focus is to get your family out as quickly as possible, having an evacuation plan and practicing it can give you time to get your pets out too. Here are a few steps to take to ensure everyone, even your pets safety:
Practice Makes Perfect
Don’t be caught confused about what steps to take in case of fire. In the heat of the moment, it is almost impossible to think of everything you need to do. This is why practicing the actual plan is important. This will help you to leave time to pick up your pets and take them to the designated meeting spot.
Where do Your Pets Go?
Take note of the places your pets go when they are scared. Does your dog hide behind the sofa when a thunderstorm strikes? Does your cat hide in the laundry room when something startles her? When a fire starts, you do not want to spend a lot of time looking for your animals. Create a checklist of areas to look in case of an emergency. Keep your list on the fridge or pinned to a bulletin board for easy access. Being prepared with this checklist can help get you and your pets out as quickly as possible.
Keep Leashes by the Exit
Sometimes when animals are frightened they will run away. When you are evacuating, it is important to keep your pets on a leash so that as firetrucks and other first responders approach, everyone is safe. You will be able to find your leashes more easily if they are kept by your main exit on a hook. Then you can guide your pet to safety.
Schools out and Summer has arrived! SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County want you to keep your home clean and in great condition to keep you and your family safe and healthy! Summertime often means playing outside, swimming, and bringing that water and dirt back into the home!
Here are some helpful tips about Spring-Cleaning for your space:
Write the name of each room on the top of an index card (ie. Living room, Kitchen, Bath) Now that each room has it’s own index card, list cleaning tasks on the respective card. For example, the ‘Kitchen’ card will say:
Wipe down counters
Clean out Fridge
Clean inside of Microwave...etc.
This will help you look at the big picture and remember what comes next.
-Keep Cleaning supplies in an organized caddy so it’s easy to go from room to room
-Sort through your drawers. This will help you to really inspect your drawers, leaving no room for unexpected mold growth.
-Disinfect things that are touched daily, like door handles, cabinet pulls, and light switches.

It’s the Summer in the middle of Mississippi, and the last thing on your mind is freezing cold winter nights! By taking a few steps now, and learning a few tips for the colder months, you can protect yourself from busted pipes leading to water damage!
DO NOW:
Check your faucets and pipe heads to make sure they are functioning properly.
Check to see that your pipes are installed properly. This can be cool summer or fall night project BEFORE it gets cold and dark. Reward yourself with a popsicle!
Clean your gutters. Unclogged gutters make it easier for rain to drain. This prevents ice buildup that could damage your gutters or even your roof.
REMEMBER LATER:
Drain water from outside faucets. When water freezes and becomes ice, it expands which could cause your pipes to break.
Disconnect hoses from outside faucets. This ensures no more cold water is being stored.

Does your family have an evacuation plan in case of a fire? No one thinks it will happen to them, but household fires are more common than you think. The average number of residential fires each year is 374,000! Please know that fire can get out of control and cause injuries and even death. Therefore it is important for you and your family to have a plan in practice.
The Many Potential Causes of Household Fires:
The top leading cause cause of a household fire is cooking.
Next comes faulty heating systems.
The third most likely cause of household fires is an electrical malfunction.
The fourth most common cause is open flames in or around the house.
Evacuation Plan
An escape plan should be created for a home and an office building. Everyone should be aware of the plan, and have a common meeting place that is a safe distance from the building. This plan should be practiced so that no one is confused in case of an emergency.
Check Smoke Detectors Monthly
Some think that once their smoke detectors are installed, their work is done. Wrong. In order to ensure everyone’s safety, smoke detectors should be checked for functionality once a month. You may wonder what causes the most fires in the United States. Let me tell you what that would be--electrical fires are the most common cause of household fires across the United States. Home and business owners must carefully watch extension cords, chargers, and cords that plug into the wall from TVs, etc. If an electrical cord is old or beings to fray, immediately change it out! If home owners keep a close watch over cords and electrical equipment, it will lessen the chance that your equipment would cause a fire in your own home. If you live in an older home or have a commercial business in an older facility, it may be worth your while to have a licensed electrician come in to check your outlets and any wires he or she can get to in your home. Over time, wires can fray which could lead to a fire. If a fire does occur and you need assistance, call SERVPRO of Jackson & of Madison County at 601-353-2286. Always here to help. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Even though local officials and relief workers will be on a scene after disaster, they may not be able to reach everyone immediately. SERVPRO of Jackson knows how important it is for customers to have the fastest remediation possible, that’s why we are faster to the scene than any of our competitors.
This customer had serious water damage throughout their home due to flooding from a recent hurricane. Our IICRC certified technicians were able to quickly cut out the affected drywall, baseboards and flooring and apply drying equipment to mitigate all further loss. These customers thanked our team for helping them in their time of need and assured us that SERVPRO would always be their first call when disaster strikes.
SERVPRO has the capability to handle any size job either commercial or residential. In this case the business owner needed walls and floors demolished due to water damage caused by a bursting pipe from the recent frigid temperatures in the region. The posted image shows how catastrophic water damage can be to a business. SERVPRO's technicians were able to respond and had the equipment on scene in an hour. SERVPRO technicians were able to excavate all standing water and used commercial dehumidifiers and air movers to begin the drying process to mitigate any further loss the business may incur. This incident is proof that there is no job too large for SERVPRO to handle and all of SERVPRO's locations are within 600 miles of 50% of the population.
SERVPRO knows how important it is to remove contaminated drywall quickly before microbial growth begins to grow. Hurricane flood waters can carry lots of bacteria and filth which can cause microbial growth to set in unless properly taken care of. Most hurricane storm waters are often considered to be at least a category 2 water damage which carries gray water. As you can see in this image, trained technicians removed affected drywall and isolated the unsanitary material which also helps the drying process. SERVPRO ensures that homeowners are well taken care of by demolition and removal of infected materials and preventing microbial growth buildup through antimicrobial application. This specific incident was dealt with timely service and a professional courteous attitude. Thanks to this customer for giving us a positive review and allowing us to help her in her time of need.
Water damage to homes during hurricanes are unavoidable, unfortunate situations. SERVPRO was able to service a victim of a water loss due to a hurricane recently. As seen in the picture, we removed parts of drywall on the walls as part of the drying process. Unless taken care of promptly, once water has saturated materials it is likely that microbial growth will occur. In this instance, the drywall was not drying quickly enough to prevent the microbial growth. We removed parts of the drywall in areas that could not be restored in order to salvage the rest of the drywall. The owner commented on the technicians who responding, saying that they were, "Professional and polite." SERVPRO has backing of a nation-wide corporation to insure that each franchise has the resources to get the job done right.
In this image, the home was infested with microbial growth from water damage that was not dealt with properly in the past. SERVPRO's professional demolition team removed all the affected materials and applied antimicrobial treatment to prevent any possible reoccurring microbial growth. It is important to always treat water damage in a professional manner using the latest moisture reading equipment to ensure structure materials have dried properly. If materials are not dried within seventy-two hours microbial growth has most likely occurred. Dwelling in a structure with high concentrations of microbial growth can possibly be detrimental to a person's health with a possibility of causing nasal and throat irritation, as well as eye and skin irritation. Microbial build up can also intensify allergies in homeowners and pets. SERVPRO is highly trained in microbial growth remediation.

Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Jackson & SERVPRO of Madison County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
If You See Signs of Mold, Call Us Today – 601-353-2286

FLOODING Heavy rains could fill rivers and streams, bringing flooding to the area. If your neighborhood is threatened with the possibility of flooding, here are some things you should do:
1. Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.
2. Stay away from floodwaters.
3. If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
4. Keep children out of the water.
5. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.

The free Emergency App is available in app stores by searching for the American Red Cross or going to redcross.org/apps.

When there is a fire, everything becomes very chaotic in a short amount of time. Here are some basic guidelines on what to do if a fire happens in your home or at your business. Fires caused by electrical issues are the most common at this time.
Make sure that there is always clear and unobstructed pathway to the exit in case of fire. Make sure your electrical cords are in good condition before you use them. Make sure you don not overload electrical outlets.
If you hear a fire alarm, always treat that as if there is a real fire. If there is smoke in the air, stay low to the ground so you do not inhale smoke. Crawl to the nearest exit with your hand along the wall so you do not become disorientated. Once you are away from the fire and in a safe location, call emergency personnel.
MOLD. This is a word home owners or business owners dread to hear. Mold can cause all kinds of issues and can be expensive to fix when you have a big problem. Molds grow best in dark, damp, humid and warm conditions. Mold spreads by reproducing spores. Some molds can grow in a harsher condition as well. Some common indoor molds are Cladosporium, Penicillium, Alternaria and Aspergillus. Some people are more sensitive to molds and it can cause them to have skin and eye irritations. People with allergies and lung conditions can develop infections, according to the CDC.
Here are a few locations that are more likely to have mold issues in your area:
Antique shops
Greenhouses
Saunas
Farms
Mills
Construction areas
Flower shops
Summer cottages
If you believe you are having a mold issue in your home or business, let SERVPRO of Jackson come do testing for you. It is better to start working on the issue before it gets out of hand! Call us at 601-353-2286! #AlwaysHereToHelp
Keep humidity levels as low as you can—no higher than 50%–all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help you keep the level low. Bear in mind that humidity levels change over the course of a day with changes in the moisture in the air and the air temperature, so you will need to check the humidity levels more than once a day.
Use an air conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months.
Be sure the home has adequate ventilation, including exhaust fans.
Add mold inhibitors to paints before application.
Clean bathrooms with mold killing products.
Do not carpet bathrooms and basements.
Remove or replace previously soaked carpets and upholstery.
How can people decrease mold exposure?
Sensitive individuals should avoid areas that are likely to have mold, such as compost piles, cut grass, and wooded areas. Inside homes, mold growth can be slowed by controlling humidity levels and ventilating showers and cooking areas. If there is mold growth in your home, you should clean up the mold and fix the water problem. Mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with commercial products, such as the ones offered by SERVPRO of Jackson. We are knowledgeable and ready to help you clean up your mold problem today. Call us at 601-353-2286. Always Here To Help!

-Use exhaust fans in your home
-Leave the AC Unit running when you are not at home

Electrical fires are the most common cause of household fires across the United States. This is why home owners must be consistent on watching how electrical equipment is kept and making sure that cords are not frayed or damaged. When electrical cords are frayed or old, it is a good idea to switch the cord out. This also is something we must watch with our kitchen appliances and TVs also. If home owners keep a close watch over cords and electrical equipment, it will lessen the chance that your equipment would cause a fire in your own home. In older homes, it is a wonderful idea to have a licensed electrician come in to check your outlets and any wires he or she can get to in your home. Over time, wires can fray which could lead to a fire. If a fire does occur and you need assistance, call SERVPRO of Jackson at 6101-353-2286. Always here to help. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
This is a great photographic example that shows what can happen when a flood or water damage occurs in a space. This warehouse has a lot of water damage due to a flood in the area. The water came rushing into the warehouse where it did not recede. So this is when SERVPRO of Jackson was called in to take care of this situation. When our team got to the site, they hit the ground running. After our production manager took a good look at the scene and formulated a plan, we had several team members who started the extraction process. The water covered a large area in this warehouse, so our team used different methods to remove the water. After the water was removed, the drying process began. Our drying equipment was placed throughout the large area in order to successfully dry the concrete. The owner of this building was very happy with our quick response and immediate formulation of the plan of action to get him back in business fast.
This picture depicts a water damage scene in which our SERVPRO of Jackson team was called out to after water leaked into the bedroom. The carpet was saturated upon arrival so the team jumped into action. When this happens, the carpet must be dried out and in this case, the wall needed to be dried also. After the moisture readings were complete, the team pulled the carpet back from the wall and begin to set up the drying equipment. In this scenario, the carpet is dried with different equipment that the SERVPRO of Jackson teams brings with the to the site. As you can see in this picture, the carpet is lifted as the equipment sends air under it. This helps the carpet dry more quickly and efficiently. The wall is being dried with the equipment also. This customer was very pleased with the results from our work and was surprised that we were able to work so quickly to get this job finished for them.
When water damage happens in an apartment unit, it can cause issues for the individuals who live around that leak. There are several different common leaks that happen at an apartment. These are leaks from the roof or windows, leaks from the air conditioner, leaks from plumbing fixtures, or leaks from pipes. Those are common causes of lost when water damage is the ending result. In the picture, you can see the leak came from the unit above. The ceiling became saturated and ended up bursting. When this customer called SERVPRO of Jackson, we were able to respond quickly, which is always our goal. This impressed the customer. Our team then began to clean the area in this apartment that was covered with debris from the ceiling and water from the leak. Our team is knowledgeable in water mitigation and strives to respond quickly to jobs. Our goal is to quickly make a disaster "Like it never even happened."

It is important to be prepared for disaster to strike. Without the proper preparation, families and communities can be completely devastated. Even though local officials and relief workers will be on a scene after disaster, they may not be able to reach everyone immediately. Therefore, it is important to prepare your home for the needs of your family, your neighborhood and your community.
When preparing for emergencies it is important to remember that basic utility services such as gas, water, electricity and telephones may not be available for a period of time. It will be vital to have certain supplies to mitigate these outages.
At a minimum, keep the following items in a central location in your home. Ensure that family members are aware of the "kit" in case of an emergency. Below is a list of items to keep on hand:
1 flashlight per person
Extra batteries
1 gallon of water per day, per person
Car charger for cell phone
Non-perishable canned foods (be sure to have a non-electric can opener)
Utensils
Battery operated radio and clock
First-aid kit
Spare fuel
Fire extinguisher
Matches in a waterproof container
Infant supplies
Prescription medicine and glasses
Whistle to signal for help
Sleeping bags and blankets
Sanitary items
Pet supplies

SERVPRO Urges Jackson Home and Business Owners to “Resolve to be Ready” in 2017
Local cleanup and restoration specialist shares no-cost emergency planning tools that enable fast and effective disaster response and recovery
Jackson, MS (Grassroots Newswire) December 20, 2016 - With New Year’s Eve rapidly approaching, now is the perfect time to think about making some resolutions, according to Robby Hansbrough, owner of SERVPRO® of Jackson. While resolutions typically involve committing to personal changes and reaching goals, Hansbrough says the single most important resolution both business and home owners can make for 2017 is to “Resolve to be Ready.”
“Preparing in advance to deal with the unexpected can make a world of difference in how quickly and completely property owners can put the pieces of their lives back together,” says Hansbrough. “Emergency readiness plans are the foundation for effective and timely emergency response.”
Hansbrough encourages all property owners to take advantage of the no-cost emergency planning tools available from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) (www.ready.gov/publications), as well as SERVPRO’s Emergency READY Profile and READY Plan Mobile App (http://ready.SERVPRO.com).
For homeowners:
FEMA resources include guidelines for a creating a Family Emergency Plan and Emergency Supply List, with additional tips for pet owners, seniors, people with disabilities, and even commuters.
SERVPRO offers their free SERVPRO READY Plan app, which stores critical contact and property information electronically in advance, where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds if disaster strikes.
For business owners:
FEMA offers materials on topics ranging from creating a Business Continuity Plan to an Insurance Discussion Coverage Form in addition to guidelines for creating an Emergency Response Plan.
For businesses, SERVPRO offers a no-cost facility assessment and assistance in creating a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP). The ERP includes information about emergency contact numbers, priority and high/risk areas, shut-off valve locations and more that can then be stored in the READY app.
“The time to gather and store information like emergency contact numbers; insurance contacts; and the location of fuse boxes, fire suppression system controls, and such is before an emergency strikes, not during an emergency,” says Hansbrough. “Having this information at your fingertips can help emergency responders react as quickly and effectively as possible, helping to limit loss of property and even lives.”

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
